Unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin Territories [OTTAWA], September 4, 2024:
In response to the NDP’s announcement that it is dissolving the Supply and Confidence Agreement, Caroline Brouillette, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada, issued the following statement:
“The climate emergency won’t stop for politics. The floods, fires, and storms that are forcing Canadians from their homes and costing us billions will continue to get worse until our governments, and all parties, get serious about a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
“While the Supply and Confidence Agreement lacked real teeth on climate policy, it fostered some steps in the right direction. But its dissolution must not spell the end of cross-partisan collaboration on climate action – we can’t afford it. We still need a cap on pollution from oil and gas companies, Canada’s biggest emitters. We still need a policy in place to get Canada’s electrical grid to 100% renewable, affordable power by 2035. And the world needs Canada to show leadership on a climate finance deal for countries who are disproportionately hit by climate impacts.
“Canadians want climate action. They want big polluters to do, and pay, their fair share. All parties committed to a safe, healthy future for Canadians must work together now and have real results to show for it to voters before the next election.”
