Stephen Thomas

Stephen Thomas is a campaigner, policy analyst and engineer who has worked and volunteered for CAN-Rac member organizations for over a decade. Throughout his work, Stephen centres relationships and builds coalitions to strengthen collective action toward climate justice.

He is currently the Clean Energy Manager with the David Suzuki Foundation, where he leads a staff team, volunteer network and coalition of allied organizations. This work calls for 100 per cent clean electricity in Canada, and energy justice for communities, workers and the Indigenous nations on whose lands all energy projects are built.

While working as the Energy Campaign Coordinator for the Ecology Action Centre, Stephen led campaigns for climate and energy justice that were rooted in place, in unceded Mi’kmaq territory. He spent years learning from and supporting Mi’kmaq grassroots grandmothers in their struggle to defend the Shubenacadie River against fossil fuel projects. Stephen has volunteered for many grassroots climate justice campaigns and attended COP21 as part of the Canadian Youth Delegation.

Stephen’s experience working in the energy sector in Canada supported over 200MW of community-led renewable energy projects, as well as energy efficiency and building retrofit projects.

Stephen is a settler, originally from unceded Mi’kmaq territory in Nova Scotia. He now lives on the unceded territories of the Kanien’kehà:ka, in Montréal, Québec with his partner. Stephen is a proud member of his union local – SEPB 574.
