Unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin Territories [OTTAWA], 28 April 2026:
In response to today’s Spring Economic Update, Caroline Brouillette, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada, issued the following statement:
“There haven’t been many wins for climate action lately, but Canada’s renewed and increased climate finance commitment is one worth celebrating. Amid other countries’ devastating cuts and delays, this move illustrates what Prime Minister Carney meant by a principled and pragmatic approach to international relations. It shows that Canada remains committed to its Paris Agreement obligation to provide climate finance, and reinforces that international cooperation is in Canada’s interest.
“Our network is ready to work with government to shape the details of the pledge and ensure that it translates into accessible, transparent, grant-based finance that meets the needs of Global South partners.
“Not everything in the Spring Economic Update is good news for the climate, though: the tax incentives for enhanced oil recovery and LNG feel like a big miss for the moment we are in. And amid increasing rumours of the federal government investing public dollars in a pipeline, we’re highly concerned that the new sovereign wealth fund will be yet another thinly veiled handout to the oil and gas industry.
“As oil and gas companies pocket massive profits from rising fuel prices, new fossil fuel subsidies are a deep betrayal of Canadians struggling with affordability worries and the rising costs of climate disasters.
“Meanwhile, we’re still waiting on the electricity strategy to provide certainty for a new and improved grid. Oil and gas get action and funding; improved electricity systems get delays and discussion papers.”
Further analysis and reactions to the new climate finance pledge from members of Climate Action Network Canada and the Canadian Coalition for Climate and Development will follow in the coming days.
