Parties asked to Show Real Leadership in the Climate Emergency this Election

As the federal election unfolds, Climate Action Network Canada (CAN-Rac) releases Real Leadership in the Climate Emergency, a series of policy recommendations defining a serious and adequate response to the climate crisis that federal parties should commit to.
This summer, Canada has been experiencing some of the hottest temperatures in its recorded history with wildfires burning forests to a crisp and threatening communities in British Columbia and Ontario. Poll after poll after poll shows that climate and the environment are top of mind for Canadians. But on the campaign trail, the issue is not getting the attention nor the level of policy ambition it deserves.
Climate Action Network Canada, representing the concerns of millions of Canadians, calls on all parties to centre strong, immediate, and concrete climate action in their election platforms. Real Leadership in the Climate Emergency proposes policy recommendations around five key axes: Indigenous Rights, Justice, Caring for People and Places, Global Responsibility and Addressing the Urgency.
“This election doesn’t have to be useless. Canadians are feeling the impacts of the climate crisis here and now and the federal government has the tools and the power to respond.” said Caroline Brouillette, Climate action network Canada’s domestic policy manager. “Parties need to step up their climate commitments and compete on their vision for transforming the Canadian economy to make it safer, fairer, more caring and more resilient for all.”
