Unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin Territories [OTTAWA], 24 September 2025:

Prime Minister Carney’s last-minute withdrawal from the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Summit today sends an embarrassing signal, warns Climate Action Network Canada.

“Canada’s discombobulated, disorganized climate approach at the UN General Assembly is being noticed here at home and by our international allies,” said Caroline Brouillette, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada. “On one hand, the Prime Minister signed on to the European Union’s “All hands on deck for the just and equitable energy transition” letter and announced funding for climate resilience initiatives. But his absence from today’s summit, where many of our allies will reaffirm and strengthen their commitment to climate action, is glaring.”

“This absence only sows more confusion and doubt, amid recent uncertainty over whether the federal government is still committed to Canada’s climate targets and to key emissions-reductions policies. Prime Minister Carney and his team need to get their act together and close the gap between words and actions before COP – both at a national and international level. Is Canada in, or out? Climate Action Network Canada and its members are watching.”
