2030 Emissions Reduction Plan improves on transparency, but whole-of-government approach is missing

The 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP) released today is Canada’s first legally mandated climate plan. While it is the most detailed and transparent plan the federal government has ever tabled and offers some promising new measures, including new investments to the tune of CAD $9.1 billion, it still falls short of the level of transparency and ambition required.

New IPCC report: devastating climate impacts will escalate without rapid emissions cuts and climate justice

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s new report on climate impacts and adaptation confirms the only way to avoid unprecedented suffering is to prioritize climate justice. The report also demonstrates that deep, fast cuts to greenhouse gas emissions are essential to prevent exponentially increasing impacts and keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C.

Canadian civil society reacts to COP26: incremental inadequate progress; a reason to mobilize

Despite the escalating calls around the world for urgent action and justice, COP26 has delivered only tentative and incremental progress. Those most affected by climate impacts – including Indigenous Peoples and people from the Global South, especially youth and women – are leading the way fighting for a livable future. As the conference ends, people back home will be watching to see how their governments address the ongoing disconnect between the incremental steps we have seen over the past two weeks and the urgent needs of climate justice.
