Unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin Territories [OTTAWA], 20 April 2026:

The latest National Inventory Report, quietly released last week, shows that Canada’s emissions reductions progress is stagnating, with only a few years left to reach the 2030 target.

Canada has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. The new data shows that Canada has only managed to reduce emissions by 10 per cent below 2005 levels as of 2024—and by a mere 0.3 per cent (or 2.2 megatonnes) since the previous year.

The oil and gas industry continues to pollute more than any other sector, accounting for 30 per cent of Canada’s emissions, and its emissions grew by four megatonnes from 2023 to 2024.

Caroline Brouillette, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada, said: “This data makes it clear that Canada’s climate progress has stalled, held back by fossil fuel interests and political inaction—even before all of the policy rollbacks from the past year.

“Science shows that protecting our communities from the worst effects of climate change requires action now. And recent events show that shifting from volatile fossil fuels to renewable energy is the smart choice for affordability and security.

“We’re getting one wake-up call after another, and if Canada keeps hitting the snooze button, we’ll all pay the price.”
