Getting off fossil fuels
Canada and the world are at a crossroads. Our addiction to fossil fuels is causing dangerous climate change. Many countries are using this moment to make meaningful investments and to transition towards a clean, safe and reliable energy future. Meanwhile, Canada is rapidly falling behind the pack.
We need to get off of fossil fuels and invest in the clean energy economy of the 21st century. Check out three major related projects below:
Canada doesn’t need a new coal plant. In fact, we should be moving fast to phase out existing coal power. Instead, the government could let Maxim Power build a new plant and let them sneak past greenhouse gas pollution regulations. The Canadian Government has established an “Oil Sands Advocacy Strategy” through which it is systematically working to undermine and kill clean energy and climate change policies in other countries in an effort to promote the interests of big oil companies. Read more.
The Canadian Government currently gives at least $1.38 billion dollars per year in tax breaks to big oil and gas companies in Canada. Moreover, they rejected recommendations from their own departments’ of finance and the environment to end these subsidies, instead giving billions in hand-outs to big oil, most notably in the Alberta tar sands.
