To fully meet the requirements of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees and aim for 1.5 degrees Celsius Canada will need to:
- Develop a comprehensive national climate action plan in 2016 that:
- Aims to peak growth in domestic greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible on the way to phasing out greenhouse gas emissions over the next 35 years
- Sets new domestic targets for 2020, 2025, 2030 and 2050 that are in in with science assessment for 2 – 1.5 degrees Celsius (net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2045-2050)
- Transitions to a renewable energy system with appropriate policies such as carbon pricing and coordinated infrastructures investments, especially for electricity, buildings and transportation
- Ensures a just transition for fossil fuel energy workers to the renewable energy system
- Determine its fair share contributions to international financial mechanisms to generate global reductions in developing countries to avoid or displace fossil fuel infrastructure and to account for the atmospheric space Canadian emissions occupy
- End fossil fuel subsidies including through export development agencies
