President Obama’s rejection of the Keystone Pipeline crosses critical psychological threshold
Doing Canada’s fair share to protect the climate requires keeping oil in the ground
OTTAWA – By saying NO to approving the Keystone XL pipeline U.S. President Barak Obama has helped the world cross an important psychological threshold. Fossil fuel development is no longer inevitable, or socially acceptable because of the risks it imposes on the world and future generations from unbalancing the climate.
“There is no turning back: expanding the oil sands is not inevitable. Canada’s fair share contribution to keeping global warming to safe levels requires a moratorium on oil sands expansion. President Obama’s announcement today tells the world that fossil fuels are no longer socially desirable or consistent with keeping our climate in balance and our people safe” says Louise Comeau, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada.
“Canada’s economic future rests on a 100% renewable energy system. All new investments in energy infrastructure must be renewable so we fuel our economy in ways that sustain our well-being for generations to come,” adds Comeau.
