Climate Action Network Canada’s response to delayed Keystone XL verdict

In response to the announcement made today by the State Department to delay a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline pending further analysis of environmental impacts, including climate change,  Hannah McKinnon, Campaigns Director for Climate Action Network Canada has responded as follows:

“The decision by the State Department to delay a verdict on the Keystone XL pipeline is a huge blow to the Government of Canada’s efforts to export tar sands oil. The State Department can look at all the alternative routes they like, but the reality is that there is no safe route to transport dirty oil from Canada’s ‘ticking carbon bomb’.

The Canadian tar sands are Canada’s fastest growing source of greenhouse gas pollution and the Canadian government is doing nothing to regulate them. As long as the government’s approach is focused on public relations and diplomacy instead of pollution, obstacles and opposition will only continue to grow.

Countries that are concerned about climate change are making the move towards safer and cleaner renewable energies, and instead of keeping up with the pack, Canada is clinging to the dirty energy of the past.”
