Climate Action Network Canada response to Greenparty platform
April, 2011
In response to the climate change and clean energy aspects of the Green Party of Canada’s election platform, Graham Saul, Executive director of Climate Action Network Canada said the following:
Note: The Green Party platform is based on the existing ‘Green Vision’ – a policy document available permanently on the party’s website
“This is the most comprehensive vision for fighting climate change and promoting clean energy jobs that we’ve seen out of the parties so far. They’ve hit all the bases. The Green Party is saying that they would stop the handouts to big oil and use the money to invest in renewable energy and efficiency. They want to build a world class public transportation system and save money through more efficient homes and buildings. They also want to make polluters pay with a revenue neutral carbon tax while helping low-income residents save money and deal with rising energy prices. The Green Party’s plan would also support hard-hit communities in Canada and developing countries that are already struggling to deal with the impacts of climate change.
Whether it is flooding in New Brunswick, forest fires in B.C., or catastrophic events in Australia, the impacts of climate change are real and happening today. The Green Party of Canada is at the head of the pack when it comes to being honest with Canadians about the scale of the challenge and the measures that need to be taken to deal with the problem. In terms of promoting clean air, clean energy and a safe and stable climate, this platform is the one that others will be measured against.”
