The following letter was sent to John Baird, Conservative Member of Parliament for Ottawa West-Nepean.
January 7, 2007
Hon. John Baird
Nepean Constituency Office
Dear John,
I am writing to urge you to put the utmost effort into fighting Global Warming in your new job. I have followed this issue for 15 years and I believe we are now in the last days when we can do anything about it….
It is 2 years now since Dr Rajendra Pachauri’s said the world already had dangerous levels of carbon dioxide as he called for immediate “very deep” cuts… “Climate change is for real. We have just a small window of opportunity and it is closing rather rapidly. There is not a moment to lose. We are risking the ability of the human race to survive.” Who is Dr Pachauri? None other than George W. Bush’s handpicked representative to lead the International Panel on Climate Change.
Other authorities? Look at what the national science academies of all G8 countries plus China, India and Brazil said in 2006: “The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action. It is vital that all nations identify cost-effective steps that they can take now, to contribute to substantial and long-term reduction in net global greenhouse gas emissions.”
I can go on and on with authoritative science. The new IPCC report will be out in a few weeks. Please do not waste your energy on criticizing previous Environment Ministers. We need Conservative solutions. Remember Canada has a great reputation and the rest of the world will be watching. Do something bold.
I suggest making Canada the first country in the world to introduce a citizen/consumer level carbon economy like the one Minister David Miliband is planning in the UK. See http://politics.guardian.co.uk/green/story/0,,1968457,00.html I strongly recommend George Monbiot’s Heat as important reading for this file. If we do nothing, despair will set in soon.
Good luck to us all,
Michael Drainie
