To the Editor,
I am disgusted at the Conservative Government’s handling of climate change in general, and the Kyoto Accord in particular. Though obviously imperfect, the Kyoto Accord was a remarkable achievement in the challenging and confusing mire of international negotiations and remains the best tool we currently have for addressing climate change at the international level.
At the local level, there are far more practical, effective, and heartening approaches being taken; for instance, the leadership in America by hundreds of Mayors who have signed on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. And what have they taken as their inspiration and their goal? The Kyoto Accord.
It seems every time a member of the Conservative cabinet speaks about climate change, they all start (and sometimes finish) by talking about the failures of the previous Liberal government. And what support of climate change initiatives did the Conservatives offer while they occupied the opposition seats in the House? Stonewalling, obscurfacation, and outright denial of the science of global warming. The fact that they can repeatedly do so in front of cameras speaks distressingly of the short memory of Canadians.
Sincerely yours,
Roger Gagné
