An Invitation to Take Your Place At the Table
 Are you
looking for a way to make sure climate change is on the agenda at the
G8 and G20? The 'At the Table' dinners are a great way to engage your MP
and your friends in a discussion about the importance of climate at
these international meetings. The G8 and G20 have promised
key things in recent meetings including: 1. Stopping
subsidies to big oil companies 2.
Money to support developing countries as they cope with
climate change 3.
Keeping global warming as
far below 2 degrees celcius as possible Check out ways to get involved below to make sure your MP knows that
Canadians want to see action on these key points (and many others!) Get involved:
1.
At
The Table Dinners and Events Organize your own dinner and invite friends and even elected officials to
discuss climate change and the G8/G20. We can give you all of the materials you need!
2. Take your Place This quick online action allows individuals
to “take
their place” by signing on to a statement that calls for bold action on
climate change.
3. Flat
Leader Photo Petition This is a fun and interactive
ongoing
action involving uploading photos with your “flat leader” (paper cut-out
of G8 leader) and including a climate change related message.
What you need to know: Background What does the At the Table Campaign mean for a climate change
organization? Campaign Asks Talking Points Campaign Tools Resources
Background
In June, the world’s most powerful leaders will gather around two
summit tables, the G8 Table in Huntsville and the G20 table in Toronto.
The
decisions they make will affect the future of life on our planet. Let’s
ensure
the voices of those most affected are heard and are reflected in the
decisions
made at the summits.
At the Table is a Canadian and global civil society campaign,
mobilizing citizens to “take their place” alongside world leaders in
important
global summits. It is a call to leaders to “take their place” in forging
bold
decisions on the issues people care about—climate change, poverty, and
economic
justice.
As an umbrella campaign, At the Table allows organizations to choose
which of the three key issues of the campaign to participate in, while
providing common open-source organizing tools. By participating in the
At the
Table campaign, Climate Action Network Canada is calling for climate
change to
be on the agenda for the G8 and G20 summits. What does the At the Table Campaign mean for a climate change
organization?
Environmental organizations are invited to
organize their own At the Table events dinners with MPs to discuss the
importance of having climate change on the agenda at the G8 and G20
summits. Organizations are also asked to promote the Take your Place
online action and Flat Leader Action to their members and networks, and
feature the At the Table widget and actions on your website.
Each
“sign on” generated by the widget will be tagged with the URL and
country where the sign up occurred allowing organizations to capture
supporter data and manage the treatment of supporters coming through
their site. The widget will also include a counter showing how many
supporters have signed onto the campaign to date. The names of the
signatories will be delivered to world leaders prior to the G8 summit. Click here to get the HTML code for the widget. Campaign Asks Cut greenhouse gas emissions
o Pollution overwhelmingly released by the world’s rich
countries
is already costing lives and livelihoods among the world’s most
vulnerable
people.
o The G8 and G20 are key opportunities to give momentum
towards a
fair, ambitious and legally- binding deal to reduce emissions that cause
global
warming.
o In Canada, our current emissions target falls far short of
what
the science requires to address climate change. For Canada to be a
credible and
effective chair of discussions about climate change, we need stronger
policies
in place to cut our own emissions.
o Two steps are necessary to begin real progress on reducing
our
emissions:
1)
put a price on pollution
2)
scale up public
investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency Help Developing
Countries Cope o G20 countries have committed to
phasing out 'inefficient' fossil fuel subsidies. These countries must
come to the table in June with plans and time-lines to reach this
goal. o
Developing countries are
most affected by climate change and yet they are least responsible for
it. o
Many vulnerable countries
urgently need help to survive a more hostile climate and to tap into
clean
energy. o
Leaders from the G8
countries have agreed to provide up to US $30 billion over the next
three years
for adaptation and emission reductions in poorer countries. They also
agreed to
find US $100 billion a year by 2020—although studies show that much more
funding will be needed. o
As host, Canada must come
to the table with our fair share of the funding needed, which we
estimate at a
modest 3 to 4 percent of the global total, equivalent to $320 to $420
million
for 2010 over and above aid commitments for fighting poverty. o
At the G20, leaders can
work to design a new climate fund that will meet the needs of the
poorest and
most vulnerable. At the G8, countries can play a role in putting money
on the table.
Talking Points - Pollution,
overwhelmingly released by the world's rich countries, is already
costing lives and livelihoods among the world's most vulnerable people
- Severe
climate conditions cause crop failures and help diseases such as
malaria and typhoid spread easily from community to community
- Vulnerable
countries urgently need help to survive in more hostile climates and
develop their own sources of clean energy
The G8 and G20
will be the first high-level summits to tackle global warming since the
UN climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. These summits are
key opportunities to: - Create a fair, ambitious and legally
binding deal to reduce omissions that cause global warming
- Pave
the way for successful completion of the UN climate change negotiations
