Pembina Institute Reacts to 2011 Federal Election Outcome

May 3, 2011

"Mr. Harper's actions on climate change and clean energy to date have been inadequate relative to the need and the opportunity. To become a leader in the fast-growing clean energy economy, Canada must implement much stronger policies than the Conservative government has introduced so far or proposed in its campaign platform." more.

Missing: Environmental Leadership in Election 2011

April 13, 2011 - Mark Hanlon, Sierra Youth Coalition

Election 2011 is well underway and the issues are flowing out of each campaign platform (or not - depending on who you ask). For the most part, issues that have been flowing from the major political parties have been primarily domestic issues. This year, we're not hearing much about Afghanistan, for example, as we had in the last election. We’re hearing about the long gun registry (again), economic recovery, health care and democracy. These are all great issues; but many climate change and sustainability groups including Sierra Youth Coalition are asking: what about climate change? more.

Oilsands has environmental, not image problem, Ignatieff says after Obama questions pipeline

April 7, 2011
Mike De Souza

Concerns raised this week by U.S. President Barack Obama regarding the oilsands need to be addressed with federal action to protect the environment and not to boost the industry’s image, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff said Thursday.

“It’s not going to be fixed by better public relations,” Ignatieff said after touring a seniors home in this suburb north of Montreal. “It’s a problem of substance.” more.

Reaction to climate change and energy in Green Party platform

April 7th, 2011

Climate Action Network Canada

"This is the most comprehensive vision for fighting climate change and promoting clean energy jobs that we’ve seen out of the parties so far. They’ve hit all the bases. The Green Party is saying that they would stop the handouts to big oil and use the money to invest in renewable energy and efficiency." more.

The Pembina Institute

"The Green Party puts tackling climate change at the heart of its platform. The result is a commitment to a suite of strong policies to cut greenhouse gas pollution, along with national emission reduction targets based on up-to-date climate science. More clearly than any of the other parties have to date, the Green Party's platform makes the case for urgent action to prevent dangerous global warming." more.

Harper’s Priorities out of whack: Fighter Jets vs. Green Power

April 1, 2011
Council of the Canadians

Canadian taxpayer dollars slated for fighter jets demonstrates Harper is “not” here for Canadian interests or the environment, says the Council of Canadians.

“For the cost of 10 fighter jets, the Canadian government could power a million homes on green electricity,” says Andrea Harden-Donahue, Energy and Climate Justice Campaigner with the Council of Canadians.

Response to NDP subsidies and clean energy annoucement

March 31, 2011

In response to Jack Layton’s announcement that the NDP will end subsidies to oil and gas and invest in renewable energy, Graham Saul, Executive Director of Climate Action Network Canada has responded as follows:

"The NDP's announcement this morning that they plan to put an end to hand outs to big oil and invest more in clean energy is a promising start to the federal election campaign. We look forward to seeing the details of these plans, but there is no doubt that Canada needs to act fast to get on board with the clean energy revolution and a good way to finance part of this transition would be to end subsidies to oil and gas and re-invest in safe and reliable renewable energy. Canadians want a clean future and leaders need to have plans to make that happen."
